March 2023 HF Net

We conducted the February HF Net at 8:30 AM Pacific Time, March 1, 2023. In attendance were:

  • Kirk Crawford KK6KC – Lomita, CA
  • Bob Lanahan KK6WYW – Vero Beach FL
  • Tom Fagan K7DF – Vail AZ
  • Doug McNulty KM4GC – Leesburg VA
  • Al NA1N – Listening in, digital only

We only had time to try phone (voice) contacts. We tried 20M, 10M and 15M.

Here are the signal reports

Due to the propagation issues, it was hard to find a band/frequency that would work for all four geographic locations. It seemed that 12M would do it if we all had it available, but we did not.

Due to the antenna failure at D8, we were unable to use that station.

January 2023 HF Net Report

We had our first HF net of the year today, Wednesday January 11, 2023 at 8:30 AM Pacific Time Participants were:

  • Kirk Crawford, KK6KC in D8 Shack, El Segundo CA
  • Jeff Wong, W0NGJ in Crossville TN
  • Doug McNulty, KM4GC in Leesburg VA
  • Bob Lanahan, KK6WYW using a web SDR located in Georgia

Phone QSO

We had good two way voice communications among all stations (Bob’s SDR is only RX) on 20 meters (14.315 MHz).

Jeff’s recording of the QSO
Bob’s recording of the QSO
Here are the three operators on the teams call
Here is what Bob’s web SDR looked like during the QSO.

JS8 Call

We switched to JS8 Call which only Doug and Kirk had working and that worked just fine. Even in Turbo Mode!

Here is a screen of JS8 Call (Kirk’s Computer) The red backed text is people contacting Kirk. You can see the waterfall at the bottom with the communication around 1400 hz.
JS8 Call uses a single frequency in each band
This is turbo mode. It uses more bandwidth ( the section around 1400 is wider) but you can send faster
Here are the bandwidths and speeds of the various modes.

It was a successful HF Net. See you next month. This year our goal is to get WinLink working over HF and add that to our HF Net.

-Kirk Crawford – KK6KC

2022-12 HF Net

We had our HF Net at 8:30 AM PST today, We just used PHONE mode on 14.315 MHz upper side band.

  • KK6KC was in El Segundo at the D8 Shack 1800 Watts
  • KM4GC was in Titusville FL campground with his portable setup 100 Watts
  • KN6RNB was in El Segundo with her end fed antenna at home 100 Watts
  • KN6OJH was in El Segundo observing the net

Results

  • KK6KC could hear KN6RNB with a 5-6 report
  • KK6KC could hear KM4GC with a 5-7 report
  • KM4GC could hear KK6KC with a 5-9 report

Recording

KK6WYW was online with an SDR in Georgia and could hear both KK6KC and KM4GC. Here is a screenshot and audio recording of part of the QSO.
