AeroDragons club is a club devoted to the sport of dragon boat racing. We are a competitive recreational team and we are a member team of the Southern California Dragon Boat Club (SCDBC). Our members are a diverse mix of The Aerospace Corporation and Los Angeles Air Force Base/Space and Missile System Center employees, military personnel, families and friends. Purpose of AeroDragons’ is to cultivate a deeper appreciation for Asian/Pacific and other cultural heritage through team building, recreation, friendship and fun.

The AeroDragons club was founded in 2004 by The Aerospace Corporation employees Mary Melton, Judy Shimamura and Frances Kawakami-Vien.

  • A dragon boating team consists of 20 paddlers sitting two abreast, a drummer who sits at the front and a steers who steers the dragon boat from the rear of the boat.

 Meetings: 
The AeroDragons club has water practice and land practice. The team practice out of Mother’s Beach on Naples Island in Long Beach.

The water practice is on Wednesdays at 6:00 PM (daylight savings time), on Saturdays at 9:00 AM and Sundays at 9:00 AM.
The AeroDragons team will be competing in Club Crew World Championships in September 1-8 2017, thus an extra practice was added in addition to the 9:00 AM practice on Sundays at 7:30 and two days of land practice.

The land practice consist of two additional workout. The paddler pick a high cardio/low impact workouts for one day and a low cardio/high impact workouts for the second day.

 Dues: 
The paddlers are required to pay a pro-rated portion of the race fees if they participate on a race, in addition to the race fee the paddler pays a yearly dues.

Yearly dues are as follow:
• Aerospace Employees (M1) $40.00 per year
• Retired Aerospace Employees (M2) $40.00 per year
• Aerospace Summer Hires and Students (ST) $40.00
• Spouses and children of M1 and M2 (A1) $100.00 per year
• Military and Civil Service personnel (A2) $40.00 per year
• All others (A3) $100.00 per year

The following are the upcoming event for the AeroDragons:
• May 20-21, Nevada Dragon Beat Race. Racing at Lake Las Vegas featuring a 2000m challenge.
• June 24-25 Vancouver, Canada we will be paddling False Creek.
• July 29-30, Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival the largest dragon boat festival in California.
• September 1-8, Club Crew World Championship in Venice Italy. This is the highest level of club competition for dragon boat in the world.
• September 30-October 1, San Diego Dragon Boat Race/PDBA Qualifiers.
